I’m surprised and delighted to say I’ve just scooped up The Laughing Heart as a client. Thrilled. A bit daunted. Good scary.
If you’ve not been to The Laughing Heart yet, words cannot totally convey to you the uniqueness of this place. It’s pure alchemy in motion, which translates across the food, the exquisite selection of wines, the staff, and the mellow vibe throughout the place. Owner Charlie Mellor is a bon vivant, a food lover, the consummate host. You’ll find him opening the door on your arrival and he is attentive throughout your meal, popping by with a new plate to try or a chat about the person that made the wine you’re guzzling.
Whilst he is full of joy and energy for what he does, he’s shy. He’s taken me on to help him, but he secretly relishes the fact that the restaurant is so candlelit and atmospheric that people can’t sit on Instagram all night. Last week, I was able to try a new dish made with Squid, ink, pumpkin, its seeds….it shouldn’t work, but it really, really did.
There is a twist of Asian cooking that runs through the whole menu, but head chef Tom Anglesea is an understated Scouser with serious talent. But somehow it all works and it all comes together to make each dish truly memorable.
Additionally, there is a ‘private dining’ room below deck. But it’s possibly the coolest space in London. You get your own chef, bar and kitchen, and Charlie calls it ‘The Cave’ (French pronunciation). It really is a cave – full of wine, song, and possibility.
